Men became the leader in Canada's unemployment gender gap in this 2008 recession. "71% of those who have lost their jobs in the recession so far are men." Different from 1980s and 90s, workers aged between 25 to 55 lost more of jobs than workers who are aged 55 and over. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives called this recession a he-cession.

Another finding is that, Ontario takes two-thirds of jobs eliminated, so it is also called an Ontario-cession and an age-cession.
