Nonprofits need to compete in the private sector with social ventures

In a recent cover story at Charity Village, freelance print and broadcast journalist Elisa Birnbaun takes a closer look at the economic impact of nonprofit organizations and the challenges they face in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

In an article entitled, Nonprofits mean business: Social ventures flourishing in for-profit world, Birnbaun engages Janice Abbott, CEO of ATIRA Property Management Inc. and consultant Robert Ferguson of Knowledge Marketing Group to examine nonprofits in terms of “a significant economic force, providing services and products, and achieving success on the same playing field as those in the private sector.”

According to Janice Abbott, CEO of ATIRA Property Management Inc., “A nonprofit has to set itself up like any other small business and only then will it have the same opportunities and challenges.

“It's absolutely not easy,” says Abbott, “and in fact it’s damn hard; you have to have the appetite to enter the private market.”
