Men became the leader in Canada's unemployment gender gap in this 2008 recession. "71% of those who have lost their jobs in the recession so far are men." Different from 1980s and 90s, workers aged between 25 to 55 lost more of jobs than workers who are aged 55 and over. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives called this recession a he-cession.

Canada can not just rely on immigration to keep the growth of population and the workforce. "Delaying the normal age of retirement, increasing fertility and faster productivity growth" can boost incomes and our economy more than immigration strategy.

Imagine Canada and Volunteer Canada released the latest research on the 2007 Canada Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating (CSGVP). This survey provides "a portrait of
activities that are integral to the Canadian social fabric." It reflects the value and facts of giving, volunteering and participating among Canadians. This information helps understand how we shape and define the community.

Current EI rules and formulas fail to address the changing environment of work and economic in Canada. EI program is not universal and equitable to all working Canadians. There is an urgent need to reform the EI program and to "protect those in precarious working conditions."Social Planning Toronto makes recommendations on how to reform the EI program.

Dr. Brenda Roche from Wellesley Institute indicates "New Directions in Community-Based Research". Community-Based Research(CBR) faces challenges such as collaborations and partnerships, its participatory methods and related evidences,outcomes and impact. Reconfigure the relationship, re-assert the role of research and develop a research infrastructure are new directions that suggested by Dr. Roche.

As the result of community recommendations leading by Income Security Advocacy Centre (ISAC) and 25 in 5 Network for Poverty Reduction, an amended Bill 152: The Poverty Reduction Act, 2009 was approved by all Ontario parties on May 6 2009.

Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration announced the Ontario Medal For Young Volunteers on April 17th. There are eight young volunteers who are between the ages of 15 and 24 honored the 2009 medal. These young people are role models who have contributed their efforts in improving the quality of community life.

Focused on accountability and public engagement, Imagine Canada re-launched its Ethical Code program in 2008. It has been a successful in community participation, 175 charities has joined the Program and raised $1.3 billion revenues by the end of 2008.
